They turned out great and I am now considering a recap. The 5's and 23's share the same woofer and dig deep so a sub woofer doesn't enter into the equation. Jan 8, 2012 · I own both the KLH 23 and 6. If you're replacing both you'll probably never notice the difference, given how delicate KLH tweeters are (and how bad the caps tend to be) I'll bet most Model 12 don't have true M12 tweeters any more. I sprayed down the switches with deoxit, still nothing. The cabinets cleaned up pretty well with some olde english. Both tweeters in the 20s were dead when I hooked the speakers up to a receiver. Shop with confidence. Seller claims to be the original owner. The hum is still there, but quieter. The cabinets are in beautiful condition and they sound great. The price was quite cheap, and the seller charged actual shipping so my cash outlay was about $45 shipped. I also have managed to get the majority of the cabinets back to their walnut veneer glory. $200, recapped and properly redoped, but cabinets need a little work. I tend to agree. The 22s were offered as standalone speakers, while the 24s and 26 were the exact same speaker when included with the model 24 and 26 all-in-one systems. The sound was incredible afterwards. I just acquired a set of KLH model 17 speakers that look new. He was recalling how the 23 came to be. Standard going for the KLH series in the 1960s and 1970s, and very similar to the KLH models 6, 17, 23, and others. When I tried them out neither tweeter worked. with a re-cap and a surround re-seal with thinned aviation permatex, they can stand with newer pieces. The tweet for the 17's and others look the same but are tuned slightly differently. Both have been used with a Marantz 2245 and Kenwood Model 500 Supreme. I removed only a little bit of the epoxy around the switch terminals during the recapping. 6's x 2, 17's, 24's, 23's x 2, and 5's. Definitely more bass than the MODEL 6. They are not the same size and I am sure they have different parameters. My Model 23 has been recapped, but the woofer has not yet been re-coated. The 17's are hooked up to teh Twenty Seven and that combo is very rich and warm. BTW, the Model 17 has 10-inch woofers, so your EPI's won't fit unless you modify the cutouts. The 20 was a 4 ohm cousin of the 17. Serial numbers are sequential 12536 and 37. This is the closest sealer to the factory stuff you can get. These ended up going to my son and daughter in law. I have two pairs of 20s (to go with my two KLH model 20 turntable/receiver systems I need to fix up) as well as a pair of KLH 6, 23 and 22. I do this for all caps, even the larger ones if the speaker is worth it. I think your model is closer to the Seventeens perhaps. You can usually find parts on ebay for the 5's. At the bottom of the middle section there a file called "crossover information for the KLH MOdel 5" download and unzip it. 2 Ohms KLH 20s - 2+2uF and 2+4uF dual caps KLH 17s - 8uF and 2+2uF dual cap I just picked up some KLH 23's and I must say they are very nice. I believe the back plate is still reinforced adequately by the remaining epoxy on that pair. as far as not being modern sounding, i disagree. Have been recapped and resealed. The Model 20's were in better shape cosmetically, but they were in desperate need of a recap. However, I have a question that is not part of that tutorial. Not my favorite 2 cubic foot boxes. I've enjoyed the KLH 23 and 5 a lot, but the Six's are head and shoulders above them IMO, and in some ways I enjoy them more then my restored AR3's, and I love my AR3's. The new cap really cleaned up the highs and re-sealing the surrounds really brings out the bass. The tweeter and crossover are the same as the model 6. Many think that the 23 was among the best 2 way speakers made in the late 60's and early 70's. They have a laid back, East Coast sound with very strong bass. I'm about to recap a Model 5 and it replacing the caps doesn't worry me but I DID have an open tweeter on one and wanted to ask whether or not resistors play into what could kill a tweeter. I have so far re-capped pairs of KLH Sixes, Realistic Nova-3's, and AR4x's, and in every case the speakers were significantly improved once the caps burned in. Once that was taken care of, they sounded great. Once I recap them I plan on a shootout between the 17s, my AR4xs and Dynaco A25s. I would not be able to test them as the seller wants to meet.
